FAQ

Façade greening enhances urban climates, reduces fine dust, produces oxygen, and promotes biodiversity. It protects buildings from weather damage, reduces noise, and improves energy efficiency by cooling in summer and insulating in winter. Our LivingWALL and LivingPANELS provide dense, structured greening, while ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT offer trellis solutions for climbing plants. These benefits have a positive impact on the building envelope and increase property value through their sustainable and modern appearance.

The choice of the right system depends on the building type, location, and greening objectives. LivingWALL and LivingPANELS are wall-mounted, ventilated systems with dense plant coverage, making them ideal for urban environments. ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT are trellis systems designed for climbing and trailing plants. Use our System Finder for initial guidance, or contact us for a personalised consultation.

Plant selection depends on location, sunlight, and climate. Our LivingWALL plants are pre-cultivated in a specially developed Vertiko substrate, while the young plants for LivingPANELS are grown in the vegetation carrier. Our range includes tested, resilient plants suited to all orientations, ensuring healthy, long-lasting greening.
Plant recommendations for our ClimbingSYSTEMS can be found in the ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT product brochures.

Façade greening requires at least two maintenance cycles per year, along with regular visual inspections. Key tasks include pruning, pest control, and occasional replanting. LivingWALL and LivingPANELS are low-maintenance thanks to their integrated irrigation system. ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT require initial plant support but then grow largely independently.

Our LivingSYSTEMS are ventilated and installed without direct contact with the façade. Trellis systems like ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT keep plants at a safe distance from the wall. We avoid invasive species that could harm masonry or structures. Regular maintenance ensures long-lasting, safe greening.

Most façades can be greened if structural conditions allow. Factors like load-bearing capacity, surface condition, and greening type are important. Solid walls, clinker façades, and ventilated façades are ideal. Our LivingWALL and LivingPANELS are versatile, while ClimbingBASE and ClimbingMOUNT suit lightweight façade solutions.

Vertiko LivingSYSTEMS are installed in several steps. First, an aluminium substructure with insulation and rear ventilation is attached to the load-bearing wall. A weather-resistant support panel is then mounted, onto which the fleece-substrate system is fixed. Finally, planting is carried out either by direct rooting in the fleece or using pre-cultivated modules.

Vertiko ClimbingSYSTEMS are installed by marking the attachment points, securing the anchors according to the wall material, and fixing the spacers. The trellis, made of metal or GFRP, is then attached to the spacers. Lastly, climbing plants are planted at the base and guided up the trellis.

Irrigation and fertilisation are managed by an automated system that precisely regulates the plants’ water and nutrient supply. Drip irrigation ensures even water distribution and is adjusted by weather stations and a smart control system. Nutrients are supplied either via liquid fertiliser within the irrigation system or through slow-release fertiliser in the substrate. A dosing unit ensures precise nutrient delivery. This system guarantees resource-efficient, healthy, and long-lasting façade greening.

Soil-bound façade greening can absorb water and nutrients directly from the soil. However, natural rainfall or groundwater is often insufficient, particularly in urban or dry regions, making additional irrigation and fertilisation necessary. A supplementary irrigation system helps prevent drought stress and optimises plant growth.

Green façades are subject to dead loads from plants, substrate, and irrigation, as well as wind, snow, and moisture loads. Additionally, live loads arise from maintenance personnel, while temperature fluctuations cause material stress. Secure fastening and careful planning are essential for safety. Vertiko provides a verifiable structural analysis for every system.

Yes, many cities, regional authorities, and national programmes provide funding. Initiatives like KfW loans and local grants support sustainable building projects. Our team can assist in identifying suitable funding for your project. The German Building Greening Association (Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V.) also provides an overview of current schemes.

The LivingWALL is available in a fire-resistant version, with most individual components certified to A2 standards. LivingPANELS are classified as B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1:2018). ClimbingBASE is made from non-combustible stainless steel, while ClimbingMOUNT meets B1 fire safety standards for glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP).
